"CHICAGO – SYNCHRONICITY"
This is a collection of photographs about the city of Chicago - the diversity, the community, the vitality of our city. At its core it’s a celebration of life as it represents the individuality of humanity and how our differences and distinct attributes meld together to create a universal story. It’s a presentation of how we all walk together in life. The synchronicity of life. I am in you and you are in me. We are all interconnected, fused together in the journey, whether we are aware of it or not. Our every thought and purpose exposes our collective vulnerability as reality is knit together behind the scenes. Our personal interpretations influence each other and our dreams are driven with each other in mind. This is how we rule the world, how we set things into motion. Every person featured in this piece has a life, a life story that's defined by who they’ve become. A silent story equal to the beauty of another's. One as important as the next. We are woven into each others lives, sometimes unknowingly, sometimes with predictability. Much of our world is lived inside our heads. We value independence, yet we can't survive without each other. We, in fact, create each other, as we share our paths and connect our futures. Our individual worlds may be vastly different, but the world we share is uniquely the same.
installation video of CHICAGO - SYNCHRONICITY" at SEVEN LIONS, 130 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago
Within this work, I photographed countless people on the streets of Chicago at different times and different days, over several months. With some I found a smile in the morning, with others a glum look while heading home after a long days work. I saw poverty and sufficiency, indifference and lack. Faces filled with hope or those distanced from reality. I looked into faces too numerous to count as I measured the streets, searching for the next image waiting to be found. And all, so my eye could create what I saw as truth - that no matter where we come from and how ever we've set foot upon the path, it is the people that are the soul of the city. And it is through our shared imaginations and passions that we create and set into motion the possibilities and expectations of a hopeful tomorrow.
In photography, street images often provoke self reflection. We put ourselves in the place of another. We envision what it would be like to be in another's shoes. Intuitively, we create a new picture in our minds, and in the process nurture a mutual compassion for humanity within ourselves. In this project, I brought in over 400 separate photographs, then digitally placed and layered them together. Most all the people I have never met, but here they walk together in camaraderie. I simply consolidated the captured moments and changed their histories a bit. I stilled a moment, carved out a portion of their past and brought it to life for the future. There’s a bit of playfulness, whimsy and unpredictability in the piece. The significant details and sub stories in the composite, invite the viewer to enter in to a fictional mini world.
There is incredible beauty in our extraordinary city of Chicago. From the energy and serenity of the lake, to the the breathtaking architectural skyline, our city epitomizes the creativity, strength and intelligence that we behold each and every day. Yet, there is no doubt that cities can be stressful places, with its share of pressures. There can be pollution, poverty, safety concerns, and lack of personal space. Yet for those of us who live here, there's a strong sense of community, a sort of joining forces, unified tolerance, an underlying feeling that we are all in this together. And so we are. We live in an amazing city that has indeed captured my heart and that of many others. ––Gail Mancuso, January 2014
