                                                         "PIXELS: RECENT PAINTINGS & SCULPTURES"
HILTON | ASMUS CONTEMPORARY WELCOMES GREEK ARTIST, KOSTIS GEORGIOU,
TO CHICAGO FOLLOWING YEARLONG FIVE MUSEUM TOUR IN CHINA

On Friday, February 15, from 500 pm to 9:00 pm,  River North gallery, Hilton|Asmus Contemporary presents "PIXELS," an exhibition of recent paintings & sculptures by Greek artist, KOSTIS GEORGIOU.  Georgiou will fly to Chicago for the opening reception following a yearlong, five-museum tour in China in 2011 and 2012.

MADELEINE PECK of ART NEWS MAGAZINE wrote: "Painting like a latter-day, Francis Bacon, Kostis Georgiou's portrayal of a featureless face suggests an identity or existential crisis in Persona I (2004). Using palette knives and thick paint, Georgiou seems to have tried to quickly capture himself on canvas, before he changed or disappeared."

Georgiou's monumental sculptures reside in major public spaces throughout Europe and Asia in the company of luminaries such as Jaume Plensa, Jean Dubuffet, Antoni Tapies, Arman, Alain Clément, Jean Tinguely, Jean-Pierre Raynaud, Vladimir Skoda, Keiji Uematsu, Federica Matta and Barry Flanagan.

"A pixel, short for picture element, is the smallest element of an image that can be illuminated or darkened," writes galleriest and fellow artist, Arica Hilton.  "And so it is, with the paintings and sculptures of Kostis Georgiou. Infused with an alchemy of brilliant colors, these smallest controllable elements burst with emotion and lyricism.  With effusive intensity, Georgiou distills and rarefies his subjects to reach their underlying form and meaning."

Born in Thessalonica, Greece in 1956, Georgiou studied stage scenery in Florence (1981-1982), painting and sculpture in the School of Fine Arts, Athens (1982-1986) with Dimitris Mitaras and Dimosthenis Kokinidis, as well as at the Royal College of Fine Arts, London (1985-1986) with Peter de Francia.  His first one-man exhibition was in Thessalonica (1974). Since then his work has been represented in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe and Asia and won several international awards.  Most recently, Georgiou's works were exhibited in a five museum tour in China.

PIXELS opens on Friday, February 15 and runs through April 5.
