MISERABLE MONKEYJigokudani National Park, Japan 2013
We are in the process of finishing our new book with Rizzoli and this has meant many hours looking through old files. The book will be far stronger than Wild Encounters and, as I think you know, Tom Brady has agreed to write the fore- word. The launch in September will be very exciting.
A new pair of eyes can sometimes find a picture that has been overlooked on our computers. I am quite guilty of not going back to cards from old assignments in search of new material. Grumpy Monkey has been one of our most popular images over the years and has sold out despite the fact that it was technically not my strongest work - it was just so dark when I took the image and this meant very marginal camera settings. But in a way, the doom and gloom makes the image. We get calls every week from galleries about its availability, but it has gone. Deep in our ling system we have discovered another strong picture of the same Japanese Macaque in the hot springs that night. I would immediately say that it is not as powerful as the original, but equally we felt we should show it to you. His mood is miserable now rather than just grumpy. |
