ON ANCIENT ICESvalbard, Norway, 2007
A polar bear climbs out of the frigid sea onto glacier ice. This ancient ice is constantly calving into the sea and creating icebergs. Bears use the ice to rest while hunting for seals. 99% of glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere are receding. Once they retreat to the point that they are on land they no longer contribute ice back into the ecosystem. |
