SPIRIT OF THE RAINFORESTBritish Columbia, Canada, 2010I spent months waiting for Spirit Bears, like this female, to come down from the hills where they feed on berries. When the salmon come back to the creeks in the fall, the bears gorge on fish to fatten up for their long winter sleep. Kermode bears are referred to by the local First Nations people as spirit bears or ghost bears. Regardless of their name, they are black bears with a rare recessive gene that turns their black coats white. When they emerge from the rainforest they really do look like ghosts. |
